Center for Rare Earths Research (nicknamed Muroran Materia) is the only research organization in Japan that conducts research into the effective use of rare earth elements, and was established with the aim of addressing urgent issues common to all of humanity, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, from the perspective of materials engineering.
The research subjects of this center include energy-saving materials and energy conversion materials, and active research is being conducted using the state-of-the-art equipment owned by the center.
The Center is also responsible for interdisciplinary educational programs for graduate students, contributing to the training of highly specialized professionals who can play an active role in the field of materials engineering. Furthermore, the Center aims to build an international research network on rare earth materials research by hosting international workshops on the effective use of rare earth elements and by conducting joint research with external universities and research institutes, with the Center playing a central role. The Center also holds lectures on the themes of rare earth materials and energy, and conducts educational activities on rare earth materials research.
